α-Bisabol
α-Bisabolol is an unsaturated monocyclic sesquiterpene, primarily obtained through biotechnological distillation from Matricaria chamomilla or the essential oil of Vanillosmopsis erythropappa. It is a high-purity dermo-cosmetic active ingredient, widely documented for its modulating action on the inflammatory cascade and its skin biocompatibility.
Phytochemical Properties and Mechanisms of Action:
- Inflammatory Modulation and Cytokine Suppression: It inhibits the synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators, specifically by reducing cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α, and by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX-2) pathway. It is indicated for the supportive treatment of erythema, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and post-acne inflammation.
- Tissue Repair and Cytoprotection: It acts as a potent antioxidant, scavenging free radicals and inhibiting UV-induced metalloproteinase degradation. It stimulates fibroblast proliferation processes, accelerating re-epithelization and the healing of micro-lesions and post-clinical procedure tissues (laser/peelings).
- Maintenance of Epidermal Barrier Integrity: It optimizes the lipid homeostasis of the stratum corneum, mimicking intercellular lipids to mitigate transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and potentiate the action of humectant substances (glycerin, hyaluronic acid).
- Anti-Inflammatory Depigmentation: It attenuates post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and melasma by blocking the inflammatory stimuli that activate the melanogenesis pathway in melanocytes.
- Antibacterial Efficacy and Acne Control: It demonstrates antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes (P. acnes), aiding in the reduction of inflammatory papules and pustules.
- Skin Penetration Enhancer: It temporarily modifies the lipid structure of the stratum corneum, reducing skin barrier resistance and safely increasing the flux and bioavailability of other co-actives (Vitamin C, retinoids, peptides).
Formulation and Safety Data:
- Compatibility: Stable across a wide pH range, ideal for O/W emulsions, lipid systems, and hypoallergenic dermatological formulations.
