Sea Bamboo (Himanthalia Elongata Extract)

Sea Bamboo (Himanthalia Elongata Extract)
Himanthalia Elongata Extract is a marine biotechnological active ingredient with a phytochemical composition rich in phlorotannins, sulfated polysaccharides (alginates), and polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is highly valued in cosmetics for its multifunctional dermatological efficacy and epigenetic protection.
Phytochemical Properties and Mechanisms of Action:
  • Advanced Photoprotection and Oxidative Stress Inhibition: Its specific phlorotannins and flavonoids (such as quercetin) neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by UV radiation, infrared (IR) radiation, and high-energy visible light (HEV/Blue Light). It prevents lipid peroxidation and actinic aging.
  • Melanogenesis Modulation (B-LIGHTYL™ Mechanism): It acts at the cellular level by reactivating the SDF-1 protein (stromal cell-derived factor 1), regulating paracrine communication between melanocytes and fibroblasts. Clinical trials document up to a −12.6% reduction in the melanin index in Caucasian skin over a 28-day period.
  • Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Homeostasis: It stimulates the transcription and synthesis of endogenous collagen, while simultaneously inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) responsible for fibrillar degradation. It optimizes oxygenation and the cellular turnover rate.
  • Hydrophilic Properties and TEWL Reduction: The present alginates and hygroscopic compounds mimic the epidermis's NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), establishing hydrogen bonds that retain structural water in the stratum corneum.
  • Anti-Inflammatory and Immunomodulatory Action: The presence of arachidonic acid (omega-3) regulates inflammatory signaling pathways, mitigating erythema and accelerating re-epithelialization processes in compromised or acne-prone skin.
Formulation Recommendations:
  • Ideal for incorporation into O/W emulsions, liposomal systems, and aqueous serums targeted at treating melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, daily urban protection, and chronological aging reversal.
